Time Management Tips for Online Learners

You might start an online degree program with the idea of saving time. However, you’ll soon discover online programs take more time than expected. At the very least, they require better time management than a traditional classroom. Online learns have to make themselves do school, keep up with their classes, and, often, have to get their work done without the encouragement of a teacher or classmates. Whether you’re already taking an online course and struggling with time management or considering starting one and not sure what it will involve, keep the following hints in mind.

  1.  Research your classes before taking them. To avoid taking on too much work, fully understand what each class involves and, if you can avoid it, don’t take on too full a load.
  2. Fully read your syllabus once you sign up for a class. Become familiar with the requirements of the class.
  3. Keep all the due dates of major and even minor projects recorded in you planner. Start by listing out projects, papers, and tests. Then, whether at the beginning of the term or from week to week, list out the day to day homework due each week. This process will help you organize your responsibilities.
  4. Keep track of your progress. Make your own deadlines. Set a day to have a first draft of a paper due and then, a day for proof reading, etc.
  5. Don’t let yourself get discouraged if you miss a deadline. Learn and move on. Focusing too much on your failures will distract you.
  6. Believe your goals are achievable.
  7. Involve your family and friends. Get help and encouragement. Many people want to help but don’t know how. Communicate.
  8. Don’t forget the importance of your schoolwork. Other responsibilities have their place but remember, you’re paying for this school. You need to get it done. Schedule your life accordingly.
  9. List out your schoolwork priorities in order of importance.
  10. Practice the art of saying no to other calls on your time. You can’t do everything.
  11. Don’t practice the art of procrastination. Get things done on time!
  12. Learn your own study strengths and weaknesses and schedule your schoolwork accordingly. Keep track of when you start burning out. Schedule so you can take breaks during these times.

Most importantly, keep the end in mind. Remember why you chose to go to school. Focus on the end result--the achievability of your dream.
